Air Infiltration Measures
Weather Stripping and Door Sweeps
This measure applies to the installation of weather stripping or door sweeps on entrance and exit doors and movable exterior windows for a contained, pressurized space. Entrance and exit doors and movable exterior windows are often installed with gaps or gaps may form over time due to deterioration of existing weather stripping. These gaps allow for the infiltration of unconditioned air into the building, adding to the cooling and heating load of the HVAC system. Weather stripping and door sweeps are designed to be installed along the bottom and jambs of exterior doors and windows to prevent air infiltration to conditioned space.
Weather stripping or door sweeps must be installed on doors or movable windows of a conditioned and/or heated space. Buildings with evaporative cooling are not eligible. Treated doors and windows must have visible gaps of at least 1/8–3/4 inches along the outside edge. A space with interior vestibule doors is not eligible.
The baseline standard for this measure is a commercial building with exterior doors and windows that are not sealed from unconditioned space. The high-efficiency condition for this measure is a commercial building with exterior doors and windows that have been sealed from unconditioned space using weather stripping and/or brush style door sweeps. The space on the interior of the door must be conditioned and/or heated.
The pre-retrofit gap width must be verified by providing photo evidence of the gap measurement. Length of installed weather stripping or door sweeps should be documented on the project invoice.
Weather Stripping and Door Sweeps Rebate Amounts ($/linear ft of installed weather stripping or door sweep)
|Cooling/Heating Type||Gap Width|
|Refrigerated Cooling + Electric Resistance Heating||$4.50||$10.00||$18.00||$28.00|
|Refrigerated Cooling + Heat Pump Heating||$2.00||$4.50||$9.00||$14.00|
Refrigerated Door Gaskets
This measure applies to the installation of door gaskets on walk-in and reach-in coolers and freezers to reduce the refrigeration load associated with the infiltration of non-refrigerated air into the refrigerated space. Additionally, the reduction in moisture entering the refrigerated space also helps prevent frost on the cooling coils. Frost build-up adversely impacts the coil’s heat transfer effectiveness, reduces air passage (lowering heat transfer efficiency), and increases energy use during the defrost cycle. Therefore, replacing defective door gaskets reduces compressor run time, reducing energy consumption and improving the overall effectiveness of heat removal from a refrigerated cabinet.
Door gaskets must be installed on walk-in and reach-in coolers or freezers. The most common applications for this measure are refrigerated coolers and freezers in supermarkets, convenience stores, restaurants, and refrigerated warehouses.
The baseline standard for this measure is a walk-in or reach-in cooler or freezer with worn-out, defective door gaskets. The efficient condition for this measure is a new, better-fitting gasket. Tight fitting gaskets inhibit infiltration of warm, moist air into the cold refrigerated space, reducing the cooling load. A decrease in moisture entering the refrigerated space also prevents frost on cooling coils.
Length of installed weather stripping or door sweeps should be documented on the project invoice.
